Zoinks! It's God's Mystery Machine Van

Sunday Legacy Letters
Turning gratitude into action, one story at a time.

There are memories that come back with a feeling before they come back with all the details. For me, Saturday mornings are like that: the quiet excitement of waking up to a day without school, the soft glow of the television, and the promise that one of my favorite cartoons was about to begin.
During my childhood in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Saturday mornings were something I always looked forward to. It wasn't just because there was no school, but mainly because of the cartoons. I couldn't wait to watch shows like "Tom & Jerry," "Space Ghost," "Johnny Quest," and my absolute favorite, "Scooby Doo." I adored how Scooby and his friends would arrive in their Mystery Machine Van, face a scary situation, and always manage to make things right. Even now, I still have a Mystery Machine Van Christmas ornament that I proudly display on our tree every year.
That ornament is a small thing, but it carries a lot of warmth for me. Each year, when I bring it out and place it on the tree, it brings those Saturday mornings close again. It reminds me of the boy who couldn't wait to see what mystery the gang would face next, and of the man, Army dad, and grandfather I have become.
When I think about Scooby and the gang, I remember how they showed up. They didn't always know what they were walking into. Sometimes the situation looked frightening. But they went in together, kept moving, and discovered that what seemed so scary could be faced. The fear was unmasked. The truth came into the light. And, somehow, things were made right.
That little cartoon lesson has stayed with me longer than I ever expected.
How can I trust God with my present and future?
As Christians, we are also called to make a positive impact on the lives of those around us. However, many people hesitate to trust God with their present and future because they fear that He will ask them to do something they don't want to do or complicate their already busy lives.
I understand that hesitation. Life already has plenty of responsibilities. We may wonder if surrender means losing control, adding one more burden, or being sent somewhere we do not want to go. I have had seasons when I was busy, uncertain, and tempted to think I should wait until life felt simpler before saying yes to God.
But the more I have learned to trust Him, the more I have seen that His call does not come with the misery I feared. Surrender is not God asking us to pretend our concerns are not real. It is trusting that He knows us better than we know ourselves, and that He is already at work within us.
If you wholeheartedly surrender to God, He will give you the desire to fulfill His calling for your life. If He is calling you to serve in ministry within your church, your heart will be drawn towards it. If He wants you to be an example of Christ in your workplace, He will ignite that desire within you. When you surrender to His will, He will bring about His good purpose in your life (Philippians 2:13).
The verse says, “for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.” You can read Philippians 2 and reflect on the passage in context.
That is a beautiful promise. God is not only asking us to act; He is working in us, shaping our willingness and giving us strength to take the next step. Sometimes that step is serving at church. Sometimes it is being patient with someone at work, encouraging a neighbor, or showing kindness when no one else sees it.
The Message puts Paul's encouragement this way: “Do everything readily and cheerfully — no bickering, no second-guessing allowed!” It also calls us to be “a breath of fresh air” in this “world polluted by sin,” carrying “the light-giving Message into the night” (Philippians 2:14–16a, MSG).
I love that picture. We do not have to be the loudest person in the room or have every answer ready. We can simply be faithful, cheerful, and present. We can offer people a glimpse of good living and of the living God through the way we listen, serve, forgive, and care.
God's calling is good, even when it isn't easy
Always remember that what God wants for your life is always good. It may not always be easy, but His plan is perfect and cannot be improved upon. He will also provide you with the energy and strength you need: "God himself willing and working at what will give him the most pleasure" (v.13 MSG).
That does not mean every calling will feel comfortable, or that we will always know where the road leads. I have had to learn that the hard way: we can compete hard, give our best, and trust God with what comes next. We do not have to see the whole route to take the next faithful step.
The Apostle Paul understood the joy of traveling from place to place, arriving in God's Mystery Machine Van...lol. He encourages us to approach everything with readiness and cheerfulness, without bickering or second-guessing. We are called to be a breath of fresh air in this polluted society, shining a light on good living and the living God. Let us carry the message of hope into the darkness of the night (vv.14-16a, MSG).

The greatest gift we can share
Today, you have been bestowed with an incredible opportunity to offer others more than just financial support or acts of kindness. You have the power to share ‘the word of life’ (v.16) with them. Witnessing individuals who were once spiritually lifeless come alive through Jesus is an unparalleled source of joy. So, let's get the Mystery Machine ready, step out into the world, and make a meaningful impact today
That is the kind of joy I want to carry with me. As a father and grandfather, I think often about what we pass along. We can leave stories, traditions, and little ornaments that make people smile. We can also leave the example of a life that tried to follow Jesus and bring hope to others.
For me, gratitude has to become action. “Gratitude isn't a certification. It's something you do.” In the spirit of Operation T.A.G., Tangible Act of Gratitude, we can show up for people with care, compassion, and faith. And as we stand up for those who stood up for us, may we also remember the deeper calling to bring encouragement and the light of Christ wherever we are.
Zoinks! We may not know exactly what is waiting around the next bend. But we can trust the God who is already working in us. We can go together, move forward with cheerfulness, and leave the outcome in His hands.
